DECEMBER 2010 – JANUARY 2011
In this month’s edition are the following articles and information:
- Book now to get the best deals (link out to vacation rentals)
- “Personal attention” on your vacation rental
- Local artist and author
- Boat Hire on Lake Como
- Ryanair new dates released
- Varenna Restaurants
Christmas and New Year is at the top of most peoples agenda right now, but it won’t be long before summer is here and with it those beautiful tranquil moments on the Lake (interrupted by George Clooney’s visits of course).
For those of you who wish to know more about the Lake and dream of owning a home or maybe retiring or spending more time here, then a new book is available in 2011; “An Italian Home” by Paul Wright, who has lived in Moltrasio for many years and can give you an insight to real local life… Paul is also a well known local artist and some of his work and more information on his trade can be found on our Buy Local page.
NOVEMBER 2010
Lake Como is moving into winter. We have taken some shots of the beautiful Autumn colours and the already snow capped mountains, surrounding the lake. The vast majority tourists have left, but we have met some interesting people from all over the globe, many on their 5th or 6th visit to the Lake!
We have added a couple of links below for December next year if you are looking for interesting events or activities.
- CONCORSO D’ELEGANZA – 20-22nd May 2011 (Plan a visit well in advance!)
The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is perhaps the most significant of all historic motor events to celebrate the wonderful heady days of free motoring in elegant, fast or romantic cars. It is undoubtedly the most traditional event which was held for the first time as early as 1929. The event is known world-wide for its incredible array of expensive and amazing motor vehicles such as Ferraris’, Bugattis, Aston Martins. There is also a prize for the best design of a contemporary style car.
The event is held at the world famous Villa D’Este, the hotel on the Lake where the stars stay. A most beautiful but somewhat expensive place for most of us. Just on the edge of Cernobbio, the hotel is very accessible from both Como and Menaggio and from across the lake via passenger ferry to the Cernobbio terminal. If you are looking for somewhere to stay then check out self catering at Lake Como Homes or Hotels on the Lake.
Coming up in December 2010:
- Toyland City is Como’s initiative to celebrate the festive season throughout the month of December. Exhibitions, puppet shows, an ice rink and other entertaining events draw families to Piazza Cavour, Piazza Duomo and other areas in the city centre. OCTOBER 2010
10/10/10 has come and gone and we are now pushing onto the end of the month and one of the quietest periods on the Lake, November. Like many European countries there are some Halloween events and no doubt fireworks, but the following periods see a quiet calm and sometimes cold descend. Personally, its my favourite time of the year. There is no pressure to go and see and do. The mountains can be tipped with snow and the cold crisp autumn and winter air brings a peace to all mankind (which is also celebrated in its own way and at a very local level).
This month we have started adding photos to this newsletter and in the “what’s on” section you will see videos about the famous villas on the lake. We would like you tell us which is your favourite villa. Everyone has their own. Ours is Balbianello, just for its external appearance/architecture and lakeside promontory location. Clearly other people may prefer bigger ornate gardens or architecture of a different form. On the right hand side you will see our poll, please choose your favourite.< When you have voted you will see the latest score.
